Every city has a Central Station and same here in Brisbane. Central Station is a main transfer point between trains and buses connecting to other cities. The building looks historical while inside of it is still practical filling with shops and restaurants.

Rather than just a station, central station is a hybrid building combines with hotel and public transportation.

Three places locate in downtown I would like to introduce are as follow:

  • ANZAC square | Shrine of Remembrance
Location : Birdwood Ave, Melbourne VIC 3001

To begin with this beautiful and Greek style construction standing right across the street from Central Station, Shrine of Remembrance. It represent the respect and memorial to Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (#ANZAC) in World War I. The light stands in the middle of the Shrine of Remembrance is called Eternal Flame, which shows peace and remembrance to them.

Walk along the Edward st. then turn into Queen st., you will fin Brisbane Arcade hide between a bunch of chain shopping stores inside the pedestrian walking area. Arcade is same as the old street in Chinese culture.

What you may find interesting is that when you travel, you feel that other countries' culture and buildings are so attractive than yours. Because you are facing the same building style and appearance everyday. While what actually is, tourists visiting your country might have the same feeling as you do when they visit. This reminds me to spend sometime observe and experience once again in my home town and treat it as a foreign country to visit. Never forget and try to understand your hometown culture.

Viewing from the outside, it looks nothing but a place for shopping. However, when you walk in and take a look at the story and structure of it, the story emerges lively in front of you.

The Brisbane Arcade is originally occupied by Mayne family home and ran a butcher shop. It is a place full of history and scandal of Patrick, family member of Mayne, who died in 1865 with rumor & scandal surrounded by, involving robbery, murder, and alleged deathbed confession. Then it was rebuilt and maintained by James Mayne & Mary Emilia Mayne, featuring Edwardian Baroque street style, original terrazzo stairs, balustrade, and dado paneling.

You may take the elevator to the upper level for gallery or downstairs for more shops. Most of them are origin handcraft products and some of them are really old shops.

Going down to the river side of Brisbane River, you may encounter Brisbane Square.

According to the government plan, this area is design for business and commercial buildings, including Brisbane City Council and Suncorp. Downstairs are leased to retailers. The plaza of Brisbane square becomes an entertainment for citizen due to the casino is just next by and the plaza provides a place for 2nd hand flee market during weekend.

Cross the Brisbane Square you will find the Victoria Bridge. The South Bank is right on the opposite of the Brisbane River from the Brisbane Square. South Bank once held World Expo in 1988 and now is planned as a Queensland cultural area, where provides cultural and educational materials and includes Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), Queensland Conservatorium Library, Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Literally it is a place for culture learning, while it also offer a place for family and friends to relax and enjoy the weekend.

  • Walk through the Arbour
